Upper Cervical Chiropractic and High Blood Pressure
High blood pressure (hypertension) can be defined as a systolic pressure of 140 or higher and/or a diastolic pressure of 90 or higher (140/90 or greater). According to CDC and the American Heart Association, 1 in 3 adults in the US have hypertension and another 20% are pre-hypertensive (130/85 – 139/89). Cardiovascular disease has been the first or second leading cause of death for nearly 30 years. The staggering fact is that these numbers continue to rise despite the rise in prescription treatment.
In the Journal of Human Hypertension, upper cervical chiropractic care was shown to significantly reduce blood pressure in individuals with high blood pressure. Medical Doctor and Director of the University of Chicago Hypertension center, Dr. Bakris MD, says that upper cervical care has the effect of two blood pressure medicines given in combination and the procedure seems to be an adverse-event free. The study showed an average drop in blood pressure 14 points in systolic pressure and 8 points in diastolic pressure.
When a gentle and non-invasive Upper Cervical adjustment is made and the upper neck is freed to move in its proper position and range of motion, it allows improved nervous system communication. When the alignment in this area is restored, the brain to body communication and our innate ability to heal has been given the right tools, high blood pressure may be reduced. Dr. Bakris MD was extremely pleased (as well as shocked!) to see the results. He notes on an interview with WebMD that misalignment or improper movement of the upper cervical complex is related to some sort of trauma to the head and neck.
The injury to the upper cervical complex could be a result and cause of poor posture, poor health, slip and falls, auto accidents, concussions, stress or even birth traumas. The best way to discover if this vital area of the body is injured is to see a trained upper cervical chiropractor, such as those at Intelligent Balance Spinal Care.
